Hey there, Reader
How have you been?
If you are anything like me, you have been thinking about a vacation, perhaps even flying to a far away place with sunny beaches instead of cold rain about to turn into snow (tomorrow!). If I could have it my way, it would also be a place without a pandemic and without a looming election! Yikes!
Ahhhhhh...
Do you know this place?
Before I get carried away...
I decided to try out an entire newsletter in English, instead of in Portuguese. That way you get to try out life in your new language. Are you still with me? Let me know if you think this will work for you!
Moving forward, this is what you can expect in my newsletters:
1. A tip: professional emails 101 (tip #1)
So, my first newsletter went out a couple of weeks ago, and I noticed that very few people actually opened the document with three tips for professional email-writing in the U.S.!
Because I know the value of this information, I will share it here, one by one, in the coming newsletters - in the original, in Portuguese, and in English. (These tips are based on actual issues I witnessed Brazilian clients doing - and being misunderstood by Americans!)
Check it out:
Certo: I would like to propose…
Errado: I WOULD LIKE TO PROPOSE…
Translation, if you don't speak Portuguese:
Never use capital letters in the text of your email unless absolutely necessary. This is because, in general, Americans interpret capitalized letters as shouting! And this creates a negative emotional response from the reader of your message, no matter how kind and friendly your content is!
Correct: I would like to propose...
Incorrect: I WOULD LIKE TO PROPOSE...
Got it?
Fascinating, isn't it?
2. A curiosity about life in this country:
What is this??
A man racing through the mud with "a somebody" hanging from their neck?
That "somebody," believe it or not, is his wife! And this "fun" activity is called a wife-carrying championship. This image is from the North American competition in 2011. Yes, they actually have championships! To find out more, check this out:
3. A question and an offer for you:
A one-question, 2-second (really!) survey:
Results will be shared anonymously in the next newsletter!
https://forms.gle/esdBUB1pKvB2BERF6
The offer:
If you refer anybody and they get in touch with me even just for a conversation, let me thank you with a 30-minute free session to discuss any aspect of your own professional transition that you would like help with!
4. A list of trainings coming up
MASTER YOUR INTERVIEW is this Monday, 11.2.20, at 6:30pm est. This is in English, so made for people from any country at all!
And there is one more class coming up in November:
CREATE YOUR AMERICAN RESUME is the following Monday, 11.9.20, also at 6:30pm EST.
Sign ups are here: https://juliakirst.com/take-a-class
Oi pessoal, (If you don't speak Portuguese, just look for the summaries in bold down the page!)
Olá pessoal, (If you don't know Portuguese, just look for text in bold and italics!) Pouca gente...
